Riverside Park Gets a Visit from the Vietnam Wall
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall is a symbol of America’s honor and recognition of the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. This wall is made of black granite and all over it are the names of more than 58,000 men and women who gave their lives or still remains missing. It’s dedicated to honor the courage and sacrifice to those who were called to serve during the longest war in US history. The wall is one of the most visited National Park Service sites in our nation’s capital and is located next to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC but there’s also a replica that travels throughout the country in various parks and community centers so that others that are unable to travel to Washington DC are able to experience and view this amazing tribute.
Our own Riverside Park is becoming known for its patriotic monuments and historical movement and a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be displayed at Riverside Park from November 8th through the 11th. On September 11 of this year the city dedicated a permanent monument which was an 800 pound granite memorial from a cornice between the twin towers in New York City and last year Riverside Park became the permanent home of a 26,000 pound veteran’s Memorial that was laser etched with images of soldiers helping injured Afghanistan’s.
The Veteran Memorial wall is about 80% the size of the one in Washington DC and Bonita Springs resident Robert Gillette paid $13,000 for the wall to be brought to the park. He was also a major donor to the Veterans Memorial that’s permanently on display at Riverside Park.
