Have More Stuff, Need More Room
Have More Stuff, Need More Room
Why we are a growing and expanding Society.
Everything is getting bigger these days including our waists. People are getting bigger houses, bigger cars and more staff. We rent buildings and lease storage space just to hold more of our stuff. Many homes are coming with extra rooms, deeper garages, and outbuildings just to maintain all of the extra things, items and products we possess. But for some, we can’t afford a lavish, enormous house to hold all of our staff to how we make our dreams and our homes feel bigger and add more space, without actually adding square footage?
Here are five simple ways to make your home feel bigger or if you’re considering purchasing a smaller home, ways to make that home expand to fit your needs.
1. You can make a home seem larger by opening up a diagonal view. This is where the line of vision extends from one corner of the house to the other. Homeowners can either remove blocking walls or install a framed opening or interior window to that there is a straight diagonal view from one corner to the other. It’s a simple trick to let your eye extend the entire length of the home.
2. Make rooms work double duty. Many of the floor plans today and failed to keep pace with the changes in lifestyle. For instance, several homes may still have formal dining rooms and living rooms which are just not utilized to the best of their ability. As much as 85% of homeowners literally never use their formal dining or living room. Turn these rooms into home offices, media rooms, libraries or dens and “if you convert a rarely used room into one that’s more suited to everyday use, the entire house will feel more spacious.”
3. If you can see it, use it. If you cannot see the room you probably are less likely to use it. If a room is hidden behind doorways, staircases or hidden from the main thoroughfares, they’re less likely to be used and take up more space in the house. Try and find a way to utilize the hidden rooms, nooks and crannies, and cubbyholes in your home.
4. Too Formal = No Use. If you have furniture and decorations that are so formal and so stuffy that nobody will want to sit on them, you’re under utilizing the furniture and therefore the space that you have. Make sure you create comfortable places for people to congregate, visit and rest a while and it will create a bigger space overall.
5. Alternate ceiling heights. This may be more work than you’re willing to put in that when so many rooms have the same ceiling height and a blend from one room to the other it cannot distinguish between 1 g use and another. If there’s no contrast between the spaces we end up seeing it as one large useless space. Experts suggest a lower ceiling over the kitchen, a medium height ceiling over the dining room, and a tall ceiling over the living space, which will give contrast and make the area work together. However, this can be an expensive proposition because it requires changes to the support structure of the house.
Adding more room, visually or literally can make a world of difference to how we use the space we’re given. Keep this in mind when selling or buying a home in Bonita Springs.
