Turtle Time in Bonita Springs

Posted:

It’s that time again! May 1 through October 31 is a special time in Bonita Springs Florida. Turtle Time, Inc is a not-for- profit organization that’s dedicated to the continued survival of the loggerhead sea turtle. May 1 through October 31 is turtle nesting season and soon all those little turtles will be making their way to the ocean. You can help by not preventing them from getting to the right place.

Baby turtles and especially the loggerhead turtle, as soon as it hatches, crawls out of the sand and heads toward the light. This is supposed to be the moon might that reflects over the ocean so that the turtles know where to go. But if man-made light is distracting them they may head towards streetlights and house lights rather than the light of the moon on the water.

You can prevent this is by bringing all beach furniture, tents, boats and toys up close to your house each night. Make sure your outside and inside lights are not visible from the beach and turn them off whenever possible. This is more serious than you think and the city of Bonita Springs has even provided a phone number to report a lighting violation. Call Mike Kirby at Bonita Springs Community Development (239) 444-6142.

Loggerhead turtles are air breathing reptiles and are one of the most common sea turtles in Florida. They feed on mollusks crabs and animals that in crest reefs and rocks and they weigh up to 400 pounds and can grow to 3 feet in length. Hatchlings however are just 2 inches long and nesting occurs May through August resulting in hatching extending through October.

Be careful when you’re out there on the beach; we want these guys to be around for as long as possible.
